Why colonoscopy is promoted so much?

Colonoscopy is the best preventive test for colon cancer.

A great majority of colon cancers develop in colon polyps.

A cancer may take up to ten years' time to develop. There is plenty of time to get these polyps detected and removed with the help of colonoscopy.

An average colonoscopy takes about 20 minutes. It is painless for more than 95% of patients. The complications rates are very low at the hands of careful, experienced and skilled endoscopist.

What do you need to know before a colonoscopy?

All colonoscopies are not the same. Tips to get the best quality colonoscopy:

1. Start with an experienced gastroenterologist who is specially trained to perform these types of procedures and has performed more than 10,000 colonoscopies.

2. Make sure that you have met the doctor. Understand the good and the bad about colonoscopy. Ask questions: Is the equipment for the colonoscopy less than 7 years old? Do they use CO2 insufflator? You should decide if you can trust them to do the best to serve your purpose.

3. Removal of advanced polyps is the main advantage of a colonoscopy. Their detection and then removal requires skill. Ask yourself: Can a general surgeon, trained in general surgery and does colonoscopies on the side, is the best option for you?

4. Do your part of getting the colon cleaned out very well. Taking a longer preparation, if advised by your doctor, may be in your best interest. Please do not cheat on the prep. If stool blocks the view of the doctor, the accuracy of the test will be reduced and polyps may go undetected.

5. Make sure you tell your doctor about your prescription and non-prescription medicines. Some of them may have to be held, altered or stopped before the colonoscopy.

6. Take this test lightly and you are exposing yourself to unnecessary risks. Make sure you and your doctor do the best they can to reduce the chances of complications. Therefore, avoid being treated as a number when you want to have a colonoscopy. Keep in mind that there are patients who are not candidates for a colonoscopy as it cannot be performed safely.

Why colonoscopy is better than the stool test?

Younger patients are now being found to have colon cancer. Take advantage of this preventive test. It can stop cancer from developing. Stool test cannot do that. Do not fall for the 'early detection of cancer' after it is too late.

Preventing cancer is better than curing an early cancer.

There is no advantage to any patient by waiting until a colon cancer develops. Get the polyps removed before they cause cancer.
